Kiran Karnik Appointed Chairman of Satyam Board

February 6, 2009: Kiran Karnik has been appointed the chairman of Satyam’s board of directors. The announcement was made by Corporate Affairs Minister, Mr P C Gupta. The appointment comes a day after A.S. Murty was named chief executive officer of the company.

Karnik is the former president of the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), the premier trade body for India’s information technology services industry. He worked closely with the industry and the Indian central and state governments to create policies and strategies to advance the sector locally and internationally. Karnik is known for promoting India’s IT capabilities to global markets, and for allaying concerns many industries and nations had about outsourcing.

Before joining NASSCOM in 2001, Karnik was managing director at Discovery Networks in India where he spearheaded the launch of Discovery Channel in South Asia in August 1995 and Animal Planet (a Discovery/ BBC joint venture) in 1999. Earlier, he was founder-director of the Consortium for Educational Communication. Karnik has a post-graduate degree from the Indian Institute of Management.
